Thank you to the Teachers, Administrators, Staff and Student Ambassadors of Red Lion Christian Academy for your enthusiastic participation in the November 9th, 2010 Open House. With 41 prospective students being represented spanning from PK3 through 10th grade, this was a wonderful turn-out for our first evening Open House of the season.
The evening was filled with excitement allowing families to meet the Administration, tour our campus and meet some of the faculty one-on-one offering specific question and answer opportunities.
One parent in attendance was quoted in saying, I never realized Red Lion had so much to offer our children. The family was particularly impressed with our ability to take a student from preschool through graduation. This was their first visit to RLCA and said at the end of the evening, We cant wait to turn in our application for next year.
Red Lion Christian Academy Self-Report Submitted to DIAA - Final Agreement Reached
Bear, DE - (November 11, 2010) - The administration of Red Lion Christian Academy (RLCA) has just concluded its exhaustive, six-month-long, self-investigation as a result of allegations of rules infractions raised earlier this year by the Delaware Interscholastic Athletic Association (DIAA). Today, RLCA submitted its report to the DIAA Board of Directors at a special meeting of the Board. In this self report,RLCA acknowledges that it failed to comply with several, applicable DIAA regulations. These findings are detailed below and all known allegations as of this date have been resolved by this agreement.
Several of these findings were self-disclosed and reported to the DIAA earlier this year and compliance improvement efforts were already under way prior to and during this investigation. Some of the self-correction efforts undertaken since March 2010 include hiring of a new Athletic Director, changes to the way the non-profit and independent FOCAS Foundation awards financial aid grants to Red Lion students, and greater emphasis on enrollment management and academic eligibility oversight. With specific regard to FOCAS,RLCA accepts the interpretation of the DIAA regarding financial aid to athletes.
As a result of our findings, we appreciate how people could reasonably draw the conclusion that Red Lion was out of compliance with DIAA rules. We have taken and continue to take our responsibility to address these concerns aggressively.
We are working closely with the DIAA to underscore the seriousness of our desire to satisfy the organization and our community of our commitment to live fully within the rules. We now enter into this agreement because we believe that a swift, decisive conclusion is the best way to finally put this matter behind both the DIAA and Red Lion, allowing both the DIAA governing body and RLCA the freedom to chart a bold, new course into the future.
Our agreement with the DIAA includes the following concessions and program changes:
Red Lion is voluntarily removing itself from the Delaware State football playoffs for the 2010 season. We believe this step makes clear our desire to address all outstanding concerns once and for all.
Red Lion will pay appropriate fines for the self-reported extra games and other infractions includingplaying an extra game, exceeding the weekly team and individual contest limits and holding practices in excess of two hours on official school days.
Red Lion will accept a one year probationary status from the DIAA during which it will voluntarily work with the DIAA to assure the governing body and the community of RLCA's commitment to full athletic program compliance.
Red Lion accepts the one year probationary status of head football coach Eric Day.
FOCAS will comply with DIAA's interpretation of the rules. To the extent that FOCAS is an independent, not-for-profit organization subject to its own governance and leadership, RLCA is nevertheless committed to doing its part to ensure that all potential conflicts of interest between FOCAS and the RLCA athletic programs are addressed to the DIAA's satisfaction.
Red Lion accepts responsibility for the ways in which oversight of our programs did not sufficiently protect against appearances of impropriety. RLCA has and will take immediate action to strengthen internal control and accountability and in full compliance with DIAA rules. RLCA's new Athletic Director, Mr. Ken Howard, will assure frequent contact and dialog with the DIAA regarding all matters relating to compliance including scheduling of sports programs, practice time guidelines, academic eligibility, and the like.
Red Lion agrees to develop a corrective action plan regarding all the self report items as well as working with DIAA to assure compliance with student eligibility and program compliance with DIAA regulations
Red Lion will be a co-sponsor of a special DIAA summit addressing rules interpretations and proposed rule changes covering matters discussed in this investigationincluding regulations governing coaching out of season, commercial camps and clinics and financial assistance.
RLCA's agreement to sanctions as a result of the self report and those additionally imposed by the DIAA Board of Directors is evidence of RLCA's unequivocal commitment to bring decisive closure to this entire matter and to foster healing within the RLCA community and its students. At its core Red Lion seeks to be a God-honoring, Christ-centered community where all members strive together to attain excellence in matters of faith, academics, and all extra-curricular activities, including athletics. We believe that the agreement we have entered into with the DIAA provides tangible evidence of our willingness to take full responsibility for ensuring that our school and our programs live up to that standard.
RLCA thanks the DIAA for its willingness to accept this agreement and for its obvious commitment to protect the students who were innocent bystanders in these matters. We look forward to a robust relationship with the DIAA as we partner together in our mutual quest to enhance the excellence of our athletic programs.

This years Homecoming Banquet Coordinator, Mrs. Kim Creek, poured on the effort to ensure that Homecoming 2010 would be memorable for all the students. Supported by an enthusiastic group of parent, faculty, and staff volunteers, Mrs. Creek and her team transformed RLCAs Pusey Center into a fun, welcoming place for the annual dinner and dance.
When asked for her thoughts about the event, Mrs. Creek had high praise for the entire team who worked to make it a success.
This event would have been impossible to pull off without the help and service of many, many RLCA parents. I was able to meet so many new families as well as get to know families who have been a part of the school for many years. Though I have run and worked on many large events in the past, this event was special! What made it special was that so many people stepped up and replied immediately to our email call for help.
